Designing Resilient and Intelligent Organizations in Times of Permanent Disruption

Description

The section “Designing Resilient and Intelligent Organizations in Times of Permanent Disruption” welcomes articles on organizational design that enables survival, adaptability, and innovation in the permacrisis environment. Continuous technological breakthroughs, paradigm shifts, global crises, and systemic shocks demand organizations that are not only structurally resilient but also capable of intelligent responses within dynamic ecosystems. Traditional design should be expanded with mindsets, frameworks and solutions promoting resilience and intelligence and forstering agility, learning, and renewal. We invite contributions that examine how organizations can thrive amid permanent disruption by integrating strategy, structure, and processes with cultural and human dimensions. Building on foundational insights such as Waterman, Peters, and Phillips’ “Structure is not organization” (1980), we will not limit or focus organizational design on structure, but also welcome submissions that may extend beyond the “7S” framework to explore reward systems, goals, technologies, and other design elements. We particularly welcome studies that highlight the interplay between human creativity, intuition, and critical thinking with the precision and efficiency of digital tools, including generative AI. Illustrative topics include adaptive structures responsive to technological and environmental shocks, agile strategies for disrupted ecosystems, comparative analyses of resilience across time, and evolving processes within permanently disrupted contexts. Theoretical explorations, empirical research, case studies, and success stories are all suitable, provided they align with the article format. Together, we aim to advance understanding of how human ingenuity and digital intelligence can harmoniously collaborate to build organizations that not only withstand disruption but transform it into a source of innovation and growth. Our mission is to provide a drop in the ocean of research necessary for designing organizations that transform permacrisis into permaopportunities.
