Did AI Kill Modeling - or Make it more important than ever?

Vasco Amaral is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science of NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA), where he is a founding member of NOVA LINCS research unit. He holds a degree in Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Mannheim. Before entering academia, he built his career in high-demand international technical environments, including software engineering roles at CERN, DESY, and LIP - experience that grounds his research in real-world complexity. His scientific work focuses on software engineering, model-driven engineering, and modeling languages, fields in which he has authored over 140 scientific papers and three books, led research and technology transfer projects, and coordinated European COST research networks.

Beyond research, Vasco has played a significant role in shaping the broader computing and engineering communities. He serves as Vice-President of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and President of the General Assembly of ACS03, the Portuguese association for quality in information and telecommunications technologies. Within the Portuguese Engineers' Association, he served as President of the Computer Science College from 2021 to 2025 and currently sits on its Representative Assembly. In 2024–2025, he brought his technical expertise directly into public policy, serving as advisor to the Secretary of State for Modernization and Digitalization in the Portuguese Constitutional Government- a testament to the practical relevance of his work at the intersection of technology, organization, and society.
